آمریکایی که من می‌شناختم
دستهایش را برایم گشود
و مرا کنار فرزندانش نشاند.

از میهنی گریخته بودم
که همسرم در آن تیرباران شد.
پیشمرگه‌ای مرا به ترکیه برد
وکیلی به فرانسه
و کفیلی به آمریکا.
چنین بود که شهروندِ این کشور شدم.

اما امروز
آنها که نوزادان را از مادرانشان
در مرز مکزیک جدا کرده‌اند
می‌خواهند شهروندی را از من پس بگیرند.

نه! این آمریکایی نیست که من می‌شناختم
آمریکایی که پروتستانهای فرانسوی
و کاتولیکهای انگلیسی به آن کوچیدند،
آمریکایی که یهودیان آلمانی
فراریانِ شوروی
و پناهندگانِ نااروپایی به آن پناه آوردند.

بگذار آمریکا دوباره آمریکا شود*
نوزادان را به پناه‌جویان برگرداند
و همه‌ی فرزندانش را بیکسان در‌بر‌بگیرد.

Let America Become America Again

The America that I knew
Opened her arms to me
And placed me next to her children.

I had fled my homeland
Where my wife was executed.
A peshmerga took me to Turkey
A lawyer to France
And a sponsor to America.
Thus I became a citizen of this country.

But today, Those who separated
Infants from their mothers
At the Mexican border
Want to remove my citizenship.

No! This is not the America that I knew
The America where French Protestants
And English Catholics migrated,
The America where German Jews
Soviet defectors
And non-European refugees took refuge.

Let America become America again*
Return infants to asylum seekers
And embrace all of her children equally.
